The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
